Generative AI is no longer something experimental. It has now become embedded in our daily way of working within Microsoft 365. Tools such as Copilot promise productivity gains, but at the same time, it also drives organizations to finally address something they have been postponing for a long time: data security.
In this blog series, I have shown step by step how you can gain control over protecting your Microsoft 365 data in the age of AI using Microsoft 365, Purview, and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps (MDA). In this concluding blog, I bring everything together and outline the complete picture.
Generative AI does not change your data, but it does change the risk.
AI does not introduce new types of data. What does change, however, is the scale and speed at which existing data is used, combined, and reused. Where sensitive information was previously stored in a relatively passive way in emails, documents, and (somewhat less passively) in Teams chats, AI can now rapidly analyse, combine, regenerate, and present it (visually or in text) to users who may not even have known that this information existed, simply because they never searched for it.
That makes one thing clear: AI exponentially amplifies existing risks.
If your data landscape was already disorganized before AI, then that problem will only become more visible, and more dangerous, with AI.
First things first, there is no control without a solid foundation
A key recurring theme in this series is that AI security does not start with AI itself. Before you can even begin to think about limiting AI access, the fundamentals must be in order:
- The right licenses. Make sure your base licenses (E5-level preferably) and your pay-as-you-go structure is in order.
- Properly configured prerequisites
- Clear roles and responsibilities
- Properties that define your sensitive data
- And perhaps the most important non-technical one: your companies stance on the usage of generative AI, often defined in the company policy.
Without this foundation, measures against AI-related risks remain fragmented and ineffective. Many organizations want to “do something with Copilot”, only to discover late in the process that their tenant is not yet technically or organizationally prepared for it. AI therefore forces you to take a critical look at your existing Microsoft 365 environment. I think that’s something we should do more often, and not only when new technology comes around.
You can’t protect what you can’t see

If I would want you to take away one thing you learned from this series it’s this: insight comes before control. Leverage Microsoft Purview DSPM and the MDA application catalog to gain insight on what’s happening in your organization in regard to generative AI sites being visited and sensitive data shared with those sites. Both tools provide you with nice graphs to get an overview and the ability to drill further down in the data if you have to get more detail.
Not everything a user is allowed to see should be accessible to AI
Traditionally the rule has been: ‘if a user has access to data, they are allowed to use it’. With AI, that assumption no longer always holds true. When taking a look at Copilot, it can:
- summarize information,
- combine it across multiple sources,
- and present it in a completely new context.
And maybe, you have other reasons for Copilot denying access to certain data. Examples are not wanting (pieces of) information used in the LLM or for web grounding. Maybe it’s company policy that all information with classification ‘secret’ and up may not be used by generative AI tools, even if it’s Copilot that’s running in your own data boundary.
When we look beyond Copilot and start discussing generative AI applications from third parties, there are additional reasons to exclude (sensitive) data from these applications or websites.
Consider, for example:
- Unclear terms of use
- Unclear conditions regarding what happens to your data — for instance, is the model being trained with your data?
- Unclear conditions regarding where your data is stored
- Unclear data ownership: Who becomes the owner of your data?
So it’s not a lack of trust in your users, but an acknowledgment of the power of AI.
Without proper measures, shadow AI quickly emerges: the uncontrolled use of tools in which sensitive corporate information disappears beyond your visibility. Then again, the solution is rarely black and white. Sometimes blocking is logical; in other cases, guiding, monitoring, and raising awareness is more effective. But doing nothing is almost never an option. And this is exactly where the layered model comes into play that we built using this blogseries.
From isolated measures to a cohesive strategy

When you look at all the blogs together, a clear pattern emerges:
- Define a clear company policy
- Get your prerequisites in order
- Gain insight into your data
- Build classification through labels
- Set restrictions for AI where necessary
- Gain control over external AI usage
It is not about a single setting, a single policy, or a single product. It is about coherence. Security for AI interactions is a chain. And as with any chain, the weakest link determines the strength of the whole.
Conclusion: Securing your Microsoft 365 data for the age of AI is not a final destination
This series hopefully demonstrates that securing your Microsoft 365 data for the age of AI is not a project with a fixed end date. It is a continuous process of evaluating, adjusting and continually reconsidering how data is being used.
Microsoft continues to provide more capabilities to support this effectively, but technology alone is not enough. Policy, awareness, and clear decision‑making remain essential. The most important question to end with is simple, yet confronting:
Would you fully trust an AI assistant with all your corporate data today?
